Heavy competition for BCom, BSc IT in Madurai colleges

Madurai: Admissions for undergraduate courses at colleges in Madurai have begun, and there is fierce competition for seats in popular courses like BCom and BSc IT, especially in reputed institutions.

Colleges have seen a surge in applications for these courses, with many students hoping to secure a seat in a well-known college. The demand is so high that some colleges have already filled their seats while others are close to being full.

All major arts and science colleges in Madurai city have witnessed a significant increase in demand for BCom and BSc Computer Science/IT courses this year. Students are competing fiercely for seats, which they may secure or lose out on by even small margins based on their Class XII board exam scores. The competition is further intensified as many students from neighboring districts of Madurai are also vying for admissions.

Interestingly, there are not many takers for pure science courses, but some students are showing interest in newer and less common courses such as psychology, biotechnology, and even artificial intelligence (AI).

Here are some specific details from a few colleges in Madurai:

  • The American College: Received around 24,000 applications across all courses. BCom, BCom CA, and BCom IT are in high demand, along with BSc Computer Science. The satellite campus also sees interest in BSc AI and data science.
  • Thiagarajar College: High cutoffs this year for BCom and BSc Computer Science courses. BCom CA and BCom PA are particularly sought after.
  • Lady Doak College: Strict cutoffs for BCom courses due to tough competition.

College officials have advised students to explore other options in case they are unable to secure a seat in their preferred course. They have also urged students to consider courses that align with their interests and career goals, rather than simply opting for popular courses.

Despite the tough competition, college officials are confident that all deserving students will find a place in a college that suits their needs. They have assured students that they are working to accommodate as many students as possible and help them make informed decisions about their future.

Overall, the competition for BCom and BSc IT courses in Madurai colleges is fierce, but college officials are optimistic that all students will find a course that will set them on the path to a successful career.
