Highways Dept to Upgrade Koodal Nagar Main Road to Four-Lane

Commuters on Koodal Nagar Main Road in Madurai have been facing a bumpy ride for the past two years, due to potholes and ongoing civic work. The road, which connects Madurai city to villages like Palamedu and Alanganallur, is a vital route for villagers commuting daily to the city.

The state highways department has now announced plans to upgrade the road within the city limits from two-lane to four-lane, at a cost of around `10 crore. This 4-km stretch has been congested with heavy traffic, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. The road is also frequently damaged due to ongoing civic work, which is carried out at a slow pace.

Commuters have observed a significant increase in traffic over the last five years, as residential areas along the stretch have developed. The state highways officials mentioned they are currently working on rainwater drainage along the road and plan to convert the stretch into a four-lane road.

Civic activists and commuters have expressed their concerns over the congestion and the need for better civic amenities to support the city’s expansion. With the increasing number of households in suburban extension areas, coordination between state highways and the corporation is essential to provide necessary infrastructure.

Overall, the upgrade of Koodal Nagar Main Road to a four-lane road is expected to reduce congestion and provide a smoother commute for commuters traveling between Madurai city and surrounding villages.
